2009 Environmental Summit

8th Annual Statewide Environmental Summit
The following is a list of the main policy goals discussed at the 2009 Environmental Summit.  Click the links to download the fact sheets that were distributed:
  • Establish policies to improve Missouri's low Energy Efficiency ranking, such as:
    • Statewide Energy Code: a minimum efficiency requirement for construction of new buildings
    • Combined Heat and Power: enables industry to implement energy saving technology more efficiently
    • Energy Efficiency Resource Standard: a simple market-based mechanism to encourage more efficient use of electricity and natural gas
  • Address Climate Change through the federal legislation that will cap carbon pollution and expand clean, renewable energy.
  • Making buildings more efficient through Green Building standards, such as:
    • Requiring new state-funded construction projects to meet green building and energy efficiency standards
    • Providing tax credits for homes built to green residential standards
    • A Green Schools Caucus to serve as a catalyst for legislators to educate peers about the benefits of green schools
  • Protect Public Lands by:
    • Ensuring funding for vital capital improvements to maintain Missouri's excellent State Parks
    • Continue local efforts to oppose development of the St. Louis Riverview Casino complex in the Missippi River floodplain
    •  Monitor development of a new General Management Plan for the Ozark National Scenic Riverways so that the park will be properly stewarded for future use
  • Promote Solid Waste reduction by:
    • Requiring recycling of televisions, which allows valuable materials to be reused and protects air and water from harmful metals by keeping TVs out of landfills
    • Opposing efforts to allow yard waste in landfills for methane gas collection, which has poor recovery rates and releases a potent greenhouse gas into the atmosphere
  • Promote Sustainable Agriculture practices and protect water quality - require licensing of Poultry Manure haulers and documentation to track manure once it leaves a factory farm.
  • Encourage sustainable and alternative modes of Transportation through:
    • Complete Streets policy, which encourages transportation design with all transportation needs in mind - motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, the disabled, and the elderly
    • Support funding initiatives for Public Transit
