Missouri Lawmakers: Don't Undermine Federal Climate Legislation

Contact your state senator today to urge them to vote NO on
SCR 46.

While HCR 46 was passed by the Missouri House of Representatives on March 23rd, the Senate resolution, SCR 46, is still currently pending.  This misleading resolution grossly misstates the impact of federal climate legislation.  Here's why Missouri's senators should against it:

  • If this resolution passes, Missouri will send the wrong message to U.S. Congress, indicating that our state doesn't care about climate regulation, or the benefits it would have on our economy.  But we do care: a recent PEW Environmental Poll found that 67% of Missourians support federal climate legislation that reduces pollution and encourages clean energy.
  • SCR 46 falsely claims that a responsible action against climate change will drive up household utility rates.  In reality, the Congressional Budget Office estimates the average household cost at less than 50 cents a day under proposed legislation.  Protections for low-income families will actually put Missouri's poorest families in a better position than if no energy reform were passed.
  • This resolution is wrong about the impact a comprehensive energy policy will have on Missouri's economy.  Dozens of businesses and farmers across Missouri, and hundreds from across the country, have endorsed federal climate legislation because they know it's good for their bottom lines.
  • This resolution makes the bogus claim that reducing pollution will hurt Missouri's working families.  Missouri stands to gain nearly 36,000 jobs in the growing clean energy sector.  Those jobs would put many skilled workers -- such as carpenters, electricians, and factory workers -- back to work after a long period of lay-offs and under-employment.
  • This resolution ignores the science of climate change.  Nearly every scientific institution and professional association have acknowledged the real and growing threat of climate change.  Ignoring scientific evidence and maintaining the dirty-energy status quo puts our state and our future in danger.
  • A vote for SCR 46 is a vote for more pollution, for protecting polluters, and against clean air.
